WASHINGTON–(COMMERCIAL THREAD) – Freeman Mbowe, a Tanzanian opposition politician and chairman of the Chadema party who was arrested in a nighttime police raid last July, will be represented by international lawyer Robert Amsterdam, founding partner of Amsterdam & Partners LLP, in coordination with the local defense attorney. .

The arrest of Mbowe and several others took place around 2:30 a.m. at a hotel in the northwestern port town of Mwanza, the day before Chadema’s president was to hold a public forum on constitutional reform. , according to the media. Mbowe was held in an undisclosed location out of the reach of lawyers for weeks and was reportedly tortured, before appearing in court for the first time on Friday August 6, on trumped-up terrorism financing charges, Amsterdam said.

“We condemn the brazenly criminal conduct of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s regime with these politically motivated accusations against Mbowe,” Amsterdam said. “As we have already seen a judge recuse himself and direct comments from the President interfering in the case and mar the prospects of a fair trial, it is quite clear to the international community that this is about ‘an authoritarian farce, not a judicial process. ”

Amsterdam says his firm will work closely with Mbowe’s local defense attorney, Mr. Peter Kibatala and Mr. John Mallya, Esquire, to file cases before various international bodies. “We will ensure that the Hassan regime has consequences for this blatant violation of Tanzania‘s international commitments, while seeking accountability to all officials who become complicit in the illegal conduct of the government,” Amsterdam said.

Amsterdam & Partners LLP also represents Tundu Lissu, Chadema’s vice president who competed in the 2020 presidential elections, among other opposition figures in the region such as Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) in Uganda. Amsterdam & Partners LLP is based in London and Washington DC. More information is available at https://amsterdamandpartners.com/.
