Tanzanian national detained with 4.6 kg of heroin at Cochin Ltd international airport | Kochi News

KOCHI: The Tax Intelligence Directorate (DRI) seized 4.64 kg of heroin from a Tanzanian national who arrived at Cochin Ltd (Cial) international airport in the early hours of Monday. The accused has been identified as Ashraf Mtoro (32). It reached Cial from Zanzibar in Tanzania, via Dubai on an international flight around 2:45 am Monday.
The stupefying substance, resembling incense, was found hidden inside her recording roller bag.
DRI officials said the accused, who reached Cochin with an electronic medical assistant visa, allegedly smuggled a racket based in New Delhi. Mtoro was invited by the gang to stay at a city hotel and later travel to New Delhi by train to deliver the shipment, officials said.
DRI sources said the contraband was handed over to the passenger by an unidentified person in Tanzania and that he was not aware of who was supposed to receive it in New Delhi. DRI registered a complaint against him under NDPS and recorded his arrest. Although authorities confirmed that the recovered drug was heroin, the samples were sent for laboratory analysis. He would be presented to court after receiving the test reports.
